Factors affecting Heart beat
We very well know that our Heart is a pumping organ that helps in transporting blood to every nook and corner of our body. The heart is a muscular structure that keeps beating by continuous contractions and relaxations. In this process, blood gets pumped in and out of the heart. The Heart’s pumping rate plays a very important role for all the metabolic activities in our body. Our heart beat varies in accordance to our activities. When we are lying down, our heart does not have to pump against gravity. When we are sitting, it beats about 4 beats faster in a minute and when we are standing about 14 beats faster in a minute. Exercise increases heart rate still more. After a long walk or prolonged swimming, it may take about an hour for the heart beat rate to get back to normal. The functional efficiency of the heart is measured by how quick it returns to normal state after exercise. Proper athletic training speeds up the rate of recovery. In case of fever the doctor always feels the pulse because temperature immediately affects heart rate. As temperature increases, heart rate also increases until a very high temperature like 107o or 110o. Further increase in temperature ceases heart beat. Similarly, as temperature gets down, heart rate decreases. At a temperature of about 64o, a human would freeze to death.
